The President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau, has announced that Nigeria’s national women’s football team, the Senior National Team or Super Falcons, will face off against Cameroon’s Indomitable Lionesses in an international friendly match. This game is scheduled for May 31st and June 3rd at the recently refurbished MKO Abiola Stadium located in Abeokuta.
The NFF boss also stated that the Sports Complex would host Burkina Faso, Côte d'Ivoire, Niger, Togo, Benin, Ghana, and Nigeria in a West Africa Football Union (WAFU) Under-17 Championship in September 2025.
Alhaji Gusau disclosed this during his visit as part of the NFF executive committee who paid a courtesy call to Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, in Abeokuta on Sunday.
We're setting up a friendly match between our senior women’s national team, the Super Falcons, and Cameroon's Indomitable Lionesses, scheduled for the end of this month.
We have organized two-legged matches; the initial match will take place on May 31st, followed by the return fixture on June 3rd.
Therefore, our intention is to hold the initial game on May 31st at Remo Stars Stadium, followed by the subsequent match in Abeokuta, which means the contest scheduled for June 3rd will take place at the MKO Abiola Sports Complex.
In my capacity as the interim President of WAFU B, I have attempted to obtain the hosting privileges for the Under-17 qualifiers under our region, encompassing approximately seven nations including Burkina Faso, Côte d'Ivoire, Niger, Togo, Benin, Ghana, and Nigeria.
He stated that they have acquired the hosting rights, and he notified them that the event will be held in Ogun State.
Gusau also pointed out that the federation he led had successfully cleaned up the Nigeria Professional Football League.
Upon joining, everyone was aware that discussing the Nigerian Premier League was off-limits since no one could inform you about when the season would begin or conclude.
"We committed ourselves to doing what’s right, and we’ve strived to ensure that the Nigeria Premier League matches the standards of other global leagues. By this season, we succeeded in achieving that," he stated.
During his speech, Governor Abiodun expressed gratitude to the management of the NFF for their efforts in restructuring and repositioning the Premier League, noting that it has risen to become one of the most esteemed leagues globally.
Governor Abiodun further mentioned that his government is striving to cultivate a sports economy within the state, noting that everyone is actively involved to make sure the National Sports Festival sets a benchmark for hosting events across the nation.
The Governor additionally commended RemoStars Football Club for winning the Nigeria Professional Football League trophy, highlighting that this accomplishment had not occurred within the state or the southwestern region in more than two decades.
I appreciate your support as we develop our economy through sports initiatives. Additionally, we'll be hosting the All African Under-18 and Under-20 athletic events this July, leveraging our improved facilities.
"You've also mentioned that several matches will take place here, and we're incredibly enthusiastic about that. It will aid us in bolstering our sporting economy, which we started to build so as to maintain this stadium we constructed," he stated.
The Governor additionally committed his administration’s backing to ensure that the state-owned team regains its prominent position amongst the ranks of football teams nationwide.
As a government, I commit to pledging our full support for sports, with an emphasis on football. No matter what approach or actions our Gateway Football Club takes, we will be committed to investing in them.
"As the saying goes, 'charity begins at home,' so we couldn't make such an investment only for them not to win the Premier League," he stated.
