The The Nigeria Olympic Committee has introduced a new safeguarding measure along with a mental health platform in anticipation of the 22nd National Sports Festival taking place in Ogun State, according to PUNCH Sports Extra.
This effort encompasses the release of an extensive protection guidebook along with the launch of SAFE SPACE, a specialized portal aimed at enhancing athlete well-being, offering mental health resources, and reinforcing safeguards throughout Nigeria’s sports ecosystem.
The National Olympic Committee states that this step is part of their broader dedication to fostering safer sports settings, aligning with International Olympic Committee regulations that were established back in 2004.
Created in partnership with the mental health organization My Space My Time, this new platform will perform risk evaluations for athletes and officials participating in the Games.
The organizers indicate that the information collected will shape national protection strategies and aid in establishing stronger frameworks for thwarting misconduct and bolstering mental well-being support systems.
The NOC released a statement indicating that the safeguarding handbook serves as an operational tool designed for sports organizations, trainers, and participants. This guide delineates methods to avoid harmful situations, recognize indications of mistreatment, and address safeguarding issues appropriately.
Handbooks will be provided to every athlete and official attending the SAFE SPACE area during the festival.
The SAFE SPACE platform will likewise offer training sessions and professional advice on safety measures, serving as a key center for education, advocacy, and assistance.
NOC president Habu Gumel said the initiative marked a major step forward for athlete welfare in Nigeria.
“We believe that sport has the power to transform lives, and it must be a safe and supportive space for athletes to flourish,” Gumel said.
“Our Safeguarding Handbook and SAFE SPACE initiative represent crucial steps towards fostering a culture of care and respect in sports, where athletes can thrive and reach their full potential.
We extend an invitation to State Sports Councils, committees, athletes, and all parties involved to participate in this initiative by exploring the Safe Space Zone, emphasizing the importance of athlete protection and safety.
Dr. Olajide Joseph Adebola leads the NOC Safeguard Commission, with Femi Abioye, Dr. Oluwaseun Nariwoh, Dr. Bakare Ummukulthoum, Justina Erezi, and Kemi Obidahunsi acting as members.
