The Ogun State Waste Management Authority (OGWAMA) has initiated round-the-clock operations leading up to the 22nd National Sports Festival, known as 'Gateway Games 2024'. This effort is designed to ensure that the state remains clean, healthy, and safe from various environmental issues both before, during, and after the event.
Abayomi Hunye, who serves as the Special Adviser to the Governor and also holds the position of Special Adviser on OGWEMA, mentioned that this cleanup initiative will continue until the conclusion of the festival. The primary objective is to maintain cleanliness throughout the state due to the anticipated influx of athletes, officials, visitors, and tourists.
As per his statement, every staff member along with the equipment from the Authority has been allocated to guarantee the success of the mission.
To accomplish this objective, round-the-clock operations lasting 24 hours each day have been initiated with the purpose of removing all waste materials from throughout the state and clearing out silted areas along roadsides to ensure a more pristine environment.
All private sector participants (PSPs) involved in waste management across the state have been activated and are making additional runs to handle both household and public refuse. This ensures that no waste accumulates unnecessarily throughout the region. Additionally, government-operated compactors have been dispatched to support these efforts.
He mentioned that for competition sites located throughout the state, measures have been established to manage and collect all waste generated from various human activities. Additionally, cleaners will be working in shifts to maintain cleanliness at these venues as well as all highways and streets across the region.
Hunye consequently urged visitors and tourists entering the state to exercise caution when driving and remain vigilant for OGWAMA Warning Signs since their personnel will be conducting round-the-clock special operations fulfilling their legal responsibilities on the highways and thoroughfares throughout the region.
He urged the state’s inhabitants to maintain cleanliness in their surroundings as they typically do, sort their waste into containers to facilitate proper collection and disposal by the PSP.
